Gestural codas pave the way to the understanding of verbal irony

چکیده
It is well known that speakers rely on prosodic and gestural features at the time of producing and understanding verbal irony. Yet little research has examined (a) how gestures manifest themselves in spontaneous speech, both during and after ironic utterances; and (b) how the presence of the so-called ‘gestural codas’ (audiovisual cues produced after the ironic utterance) influences irony detection. In Experiment 1, spontaneously produced verbal irony utterances generated between pairs of friends in conversational dyads were analyzed for semantic, prosodic and visual contrasts. Results show that ironic utterances contrast with immediately preceding non-ironic utterances, both in terms of prosody and gesture. Experiment 2 tested the contribution of the presence vs. absence of such ‘gestural codas’ to the perception of verbal irony. An irony rating task was conducted in which participants were audiovisually presented with a set of ambiguous discourse contexts followed by a set of matching ironic and non-ironic utterances presented in two conditions, namely without coda andwith coda. Results show that subjects detected the speaker’s ironic intent significantly better when post-utterance codas were present (88%) than when they were not (56%), thus confirming the hypothesis that visual information produced after ironic sentences is a key factor in the identification of the speaker’s ironic intent. © 2015 Elsevier B.V. Audiovisual Strategies in the Production of Ironic Speech
Verbal irony is a type of echoic allusion to an attributed utterance or thought (Sperber & Wilson, 1981) that the speaker contrasts with her/his own current thoughts (e.g., saying “You are so brilliant, man!” when he/she actually means “What a clumsy person!”). It has been shown that speakers use a variety of prosodic signals to communicate ironic intentions (see Bryant, 2011). So far, research...
متن کاملLet's talk (ironically) about the weather: Modeling verbal irony
Verbal irony plays an important role in how we communicate and express opinions about the world. While there exist many theories and empirical findings about how people use and understand verbal irony, there is to our knowledge no formal model of how people incorporate shared background knowledge and linguistic information to communicate ironically. Here we argue that a computational approach p...
متن کاملImplicit Display Theory of Verbal Irony: Towards A Computational Model of Irony
This paper proposes the implicit display theory of verbal irony that overcomes several difficulties of previous irony theories, and then describes a computational model of irony interpretation and generation based on the theory. The theory claims that irony implicitly communicates the fact that its utterance situation is surrounded by ironic environment which has three properties, but hearers c...
متن کاملDifferences in coda voicing trigger changes in gestural timing: A test case from the American English diphthong /aɪ/
We investigate the hypothesis that duration and spectral differences in vowels before voiceless versus voiced codas originate from a single source, namely the reorganization of articulatory gestures relative to one another in time. As a test case, we examine the American English diphthong /aɪ/, in which the acoustic manifestations of the nucleus /a/ and offglide /ɪ/ gestures are relatively easy...
متن کاملChildren's understanding of the meaning and functions of verbal irony.
We investigated children's understanding of irony and sensitivity to irony's meanness and humor. In Study 1, 89 participants (5-6-year-olds, 8-9-year-olds, adults) heard ironic and literal criticisms, and literal compliments. Comprehension of irony emerged between 5 and 6 years of age. Ratings of humor increased with age; ratings of meanness did not (showing that all ages perceived irony as mor...
